Shaklee Mourns Loss...

Shaklee Mourns the Loss of Our Beloved Partner
Dear Shaklee Family,

Today, the world mourns the loss of a great woman, and a true friend. Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai was a tireless pioneer and advocate for freedom, self-sustenance, and for what she called our “beautiful blue planet.” She was also a remarkable woman, a dedicated mother and grandmother, and a beloved member of our Shaklee family.

In each generation, there are a few who live their life with such passion, determination, and inspiration, that they make a lasting impact on millions of people. Wangari was such a person. She was the first woman from Central and East Africa to earn a doctorate degree and then became the first person to win a Nobel Peace Prize for the environment. Wangari did so by providing over a million people with the ability to earn an income by planting trees - and through her example and theirs, inspired the rest of the world to follow.

Wangari, a 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Founder of the Green Belt Movement, Honorary Shaklee Master Coordinator and Global Ambassador for Shaklee's "A Million Trees. A Million Dreams™" campaign. Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai joined Shaklee Chairman and CEO Roger Barnett in planting the One Millionth Tree.

It is difficult to express what Wangari Maathai has meant to me personally. It has been a privilege to know her. What I will remember most about her is her wonderful smile that would light up the darkest of days. And her gentle, but never-take-no for an answer, constant advocacy to rise up and do more for people and our planet. I will miss her deeply, but I know that her memory will remain vivid and strong for all of us. We will continue her legacy that each of us can make a difference, that we can be the hummingbird in the forest, doing what we can. And through the collective force and power of all 1.2 million members of the Shaklee Family, we too can make a difference that will last for generations.

Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy go to Wangari’s children Wanjira, Waweru, and Muta and to her granddaughter, Ruth Wangari. We offer them our love and support, and the certain knowledge that their mother’s work endures in all that we do.

Warmest regards,
Roger Barnett

Network, Network, Network and Follow Up :)

The topic of this CONFERENCE CALL was CONSISTANCY and FOLLOW UP
NEXT CALL: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 9:30PM
NETWORKING -Our focus moving forward will be building relationships, networking and social media to build repetitive opportunities to establish relationships as opposed to focusing our time on vendor and single interaction opportunities.
OFFICE HOURS -Set aside Shaklee Office Hours to keep yourself accountable and show others your commitment. Ask family members for help, like asking your husband to help with the kids, to ensure everyone aware this is time for you to focus on your business.
FOLLOW UP -Timely follow up is key in building relationships, members and repeat business.
Any LEADS should be followed up with within 48-72 hours while the lead is hot and they are excited and interested. Don't let the person who was so excited about the products get away because you didn't follow up.
MEMBERS -Take care of your Members, nuture the relationship and follow up with them to see how the products are working for them. Ask for referrals and tell them about incentives like the Member Referral Program where they can get free products monthly. Ask them if they want to have a showcase or know of anyone who might.
ASSIGNMENTS BEFORE THE NEXT CALL:
1. ESTABLISH YOUR GOALS. Short Term Goals (Before November 30) and Long Term Goals. What do you want in life? Where do you want to be in a year and how are you going to get there? To see a sample, read Rachel's Goals in the Shaklee Business Documents. Be specific in what you want to accomplish. Post your goals where you can see them daily. We would love to see your goals too! Post them in Shaklee Business so we can help you accomplish them!
2. POST YOUR SHAKLEE OFFICE HOURS. Establish office hours for your Shaklee Business. If you treat Shaklee like a hobby, you will get hobby like pay. If you set aside hours to work on your business and establish your action plan, you will be growing your business and your income. You can't expect to go to a job and not work and expect to get paid. Shaklee is the same way but with much greater benefits. Mark this time on your calendar so it doesn't get pushed aside. Use your list of goals to establish what you will be doing during this time.
3. PLEASE POST YOUR SHAKLEE OFFICE HOURS ON SHAKLEE BUSINESS SO WE CAN ALL KEEP EACHOTHER ACCOUNTABLE.
4. CREATE AN ORGANIZATION SYSTEM FOR YOUR MEMBERS AND LEADS. Using index cards and an index card box, write your members' and lead information on each card, including their phone number, address and what they order each time they place an order.
Divide it up into sections (follow up is physically calling them or talking to them):
1. For Follow Up
2. Leads to contact-within 72 hours
3. Already followed up with this month
I added this also: Send Thank You card
We should be contacting our members monthly or bi-monthly. Every time we speak with them, note the date and any notes. Tell them we offer Nutrition Consulting and would love to have them talk with her about any health concerns.
5. FIND A NETWORKING GROUP TO BE A PART OF. These last few months, we have seen tremendous growth and leads through business networking groups. Check out meetup.com or search for networking groups in your area on Facebook. I love women or mom business groups. Everyone is there to help motivate and grow eachother's businesses. It's incredibly encouraging and you build great relationships. Facebook networking groups allow you to post an ad once daily about your business so use this free opportunity to spread the word! Rachel is willing to go with you to any Networking Group you want or take a friend with you!

Vitamin D & Calcium

Letter from Dr. McManus: Vitamin D and Calcium

Hello Shaklee Family,

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) just released the report “Dietary Reference Intakes for Calcium and Vitamin D” that establishes higher recommended intake levels for vitamin D. The new Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for children and adults ages 1–70 has been increased to 600 IU per day, and the RDA for those ages 71 and older has been raised to 800 IU per day. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level was raised from 2,000 to 4,000 IU per day for adults. Calcium intake RDAs increased only slightly, with a range of 700–1,300 mg per day, depending on age and sex. The full report can be accessed at http://www.iom.edu/Reports/2010/Dietary-Reference-Intakes-for-Calcium-and-Vitamin-D/Report-Brief.aspx.
We recognize that the goals of the IOM are to make broad-based recommendations for the entire population and to develop reference values that serve to guide nutrient guidelines for the U.S. and Canada. We applaud the IOM for updating the vitamin D and calcium nutritional reference values established in 1997 for the potential far-reaching benefits to public health, but we also believe that such modest adjustments in recommended intakes may underserve the many population groups who are at potential risk for low intakes of calcium and/or vitamin D.
We also want to take this opportunity to reiterate that the Shaklee mission is to support optimal health for everyone, and in this case, we believe the potential benefits of calcium and vitamin D supplementation go well beyond simple nutritional adequacy and bone health. Scientific research links vitamin D inadequacy to an increased risk for certain cancers, as well as cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and diabetes—and higher intakes of vitamin D may help reduce the risk of developing these diseases. These are precisely the reasons we conducted our own extensive review of the scientific literature and sponsored two independent vitamin D research studies. We also recently adjusted our individual vitamin D intake recommendations based on an individual’s risk factors for vitamin D insufficiency.
It has been estimated that as many as 80% of Americans may have “insufficient” blood levels of vitamin D, and there are many reasons why low vitamin D levels seem to be commonplace today. The season or calendar month is a major risk factor for vitamin D insufficiency because sunlight during the winter months is less efficient at triggering vitamin D production in the skin. The risk for vitamin D insufficiency rises as sunscreen use and time spent indoors increase. The geographical latitude of your residence is another determinant of sun exposure, and those with darker skin are less efficient at converting sunlight to vitamin D. Other factors that can increase risks for vitamin D inadequacy include increasing age, increasing body mass index, lack of exercise, and limited intake of fish and other vitamin D-rich foods in the diet.
While we support the IOM for the long-awaited adjustments to the calcium RDAs, increases to the vitamin D RDAs, and the increased Safe Upper Levels of Intake (UL) for vitamin D, we also remain committed to individualized and potentially higher vitamin D intake recommendations based on an individual’s unique vitamin D risk-factor profile.
For more information about calcium, vitamin D, and your health, talk with your doctor or health care professional to discuss the steps you should take to achieve optimal calcium and vitamin D intakes. To obtain an individual vitamin D intake recommendation from Shaklee Health Sciences based on your own risk-factor profile, take the Vitamin D-Ology questionnaire at http://www.shaklee.net/members/articles/top_news/VitaminD_quiz
Sending warmest regards,
